Social Scientific Insights:
Attitudes, Policies, and Coping with the Crisis

Heejung Kim, PhD
Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences, UCSB

David Sherman, PhD
Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences, UCSB

Robin Nabi, PhD
Professor of Communication, UCSB

Prof Kim examines how culture influences psychological processes affecting behaviors, from product choices to environmental action, to interacting with others from different cultures. Her topic: Americans’ xenophobic tendencies as the pandemic threat increased from being remote to being urgent.

Prof Sherman studies the role of the self in responding to threats and stressful events, and psychological barriers to support for public policy. He’ll describe research on how Americans evaluate different policies about re-starting the economy sooner vs. later (among other policy differences) and the role of political orientation on these evaluations.

Prof Nabi researches the persuasive influences of emotion in mediated messages, including health and social issue messages, and the effects of entertainment media on attitude and behavior change. She’ll present findings on how people are coping with the COVID-19 stay at home order, with particular attention to media use.
