eScience Institute
University of Washington
From its inception, the University of Washington eScience Institute has functioned beyond departmental and college walls to exemplify the interdisciplinary breadth and complex dimensions of data science. Established in 2008 to catalyze data-intensive discovery for all fields, the core mission of the eScience Institute is to empower researchers and students to answer fundamental questions through the use of large, complex, and noisy data. The institute comprises a community of innovators in the development and application of the techniques, technologies, and best practices of data science. The eScience conception of data science has always considered the full data science workflow, from project conception to data-driven discovery---and every step in between. Today, the eScience Institute has grown into a mature organization with sustained positive impact on the UW and beyond through education, research, and community building programs. We have developed a university-wide approach to integrative education through both formal data science options, now offered by 18 academic units at UW, and informal education programs such as hackweeks, Data Science for Social Good, and Software Carpentry. We have supported transformational individuals, in both traditional and non-traditional academic roles, who bridge data science methods development and applied research. As a hub for data science on the UW campus, the eScience Institute has grown and fostered an interdisciplinary community focused on advancing data-intensive research and education across all fields.
